A man suffering from a fatal lung disease takes a marketing employee hostage to help raise funds for his treatment in this chamber style thriller from director Michael Sarrow.
Rico(Rey Goyos) doesn’t have much time after his insurance company screwed him over. With nothing to lose he finds and captures Terry(Michael Teh). An advertising expert who can help create him a campaign that will garner over two hundred and thirty five thousand dollars in just three days.
Being heavily influenced by movies like, The Death and the Maiden and Hard Candy. Smile as You Kill features some strong tense performances from both Rey Goyos and Michael Teh. You can find yourself on either character's side and your feelings swaying between the two as you watch the film. There are no easy good guys or bad guys, but it does ask if you could do what either character has done and it’s not an easy one to always answer.
For a movie with only two main characters on screen and mostly all dialouge. There is a lot of great suspense throughout this feature. The story is quite good but it would have been a lot more stronger if it didn’t start off with us knowing how fatal Rico’s illness was. They should have waited to show us that element while his video was being made. All we needed to see at the start was his prayer before the home invasion took place to understand how desperate Rico is.
Featuring some great cinematography by Jonathan Na, wonderful set design by Tessa Binder and fantastic music by Gg Grigorian. Smile as You Kill has a lot of great discussion topics addressed in this ninety minute thriller.
