Set during a gigantic flood that wipes out most of their enviroment. Four different and unique animals are put together on boat to try and find dry land in the beautifully animated feature, Flow.
Our main protagonist is a cat who has no name and neither do any of the other animals in this film. There is no need for one since there is zero dialogue in the entire run time. No celebrity voice actors to provide personalities to these creatures which also include, a dog, a capybara, a lemur and a bird. Just the meows, barks and whatever sound a capybara makes. No use of having these animals make small jokes referencing something from pop culture only adults will understand but kids won’t. No bodily humor including farts or silly prat falls. No soundtrack involving the latest trending jams where the animals break out in a dance number. Which is going to make this a hard sell for those who love that sort of thing in a family movie. From the first frame, the movie holds you in it's arms and gives you a very rewarding experieince.
The animation is gorgeous. Embarking an almost painting style that has a story book quality to it. At times you forget that you are watching an animated feature and it almost becomes like a documentary. But better because there is no annoying narrator telling you the plot or what they think the animals are feeling. There are moments of suspense, moments of laughter, moments of heart, moments of reflection on yourself as you watch this and the most incredible thing is. There is not one single word of dialogue in the 85 minute run time and it is astounding work.
Flow has won Best Animated Film for The National Board of Reviews Award, The New York Film Critics Award, European Film Awards, Los Angelas Film Critics Assocation and it is nominated for best animated film at the upcoming Golden Globes.
Cinema Recall is a proud member of the Minnesota Film Critics Association.
